I've just started training again after years off — what supplements are worth it?

Jun 02, 2026 · by Lewis Hackney

When you're just back in, less is more. The training will do most of the work. Supplements won't accelerate that.

What they can do is help you recover well enough to train consistently. That's the actual goal in the first few months back. Not maximum performance. Consistent sessions without burning out or breaking down.

What matters when you're starting again

Magnesium. Your muscles are dealing with a new load. DOMS will be rough in the first few weeks. Magnesium supports muscle recovery, reduces cramping, and improves sleep quality, which is where most of the repair happens. If you're waking up wrecked at 3am, this is the first thing to address.

Ashwagandha. Starting to train again after a long break is a physical and psychological stressor. Your body's stress response will be elevated, particularly in the first month. Ashwagandha brings cortisol down, which protects the recovery window and helps you maintain consistent energy. It also takes the edge off the mental heaviness that often comes with getting started.

Vitamin B12. Energy metabolism. If your diet hasn't been great during the time off, B12 is likely low. Low B12 produces fatigue that training won't fix. It's cheap and it works.

What to leave alone for now

Creatine is worth adding once you've built a base. For the first six to eight weeks back, focus on consistency. Creatine becomes more valuable once you're training hard enough regularly to need that extra performance edge.

Pre-workouts are mostly stimulants. They won't help you build the habit and most men end up dependent on them. Skip it.

The Recovery and Sleep Stack covers the three things that matter most when you're getting back into it.
