Does magnesium actually help with sleep?

May 28, 2026 · by Lewis Hackney

Yes. And for most men it's one of the most underrated things they can do.

Magnesium regulates the nervous system. Specifically, it activates GABA, the neurotransmitter responsible for calming brain activity. When magnesium is low, the brain struggles to switch off at night. You lie there tired but wired. You fall asleep eventually but wake up at 3am. You get eight hours that feel like five.

That's not a sleep problem. That's a magnesium problem.

What the research says

Multiple studies show magnesium supplementation improves sleep onset, sleep quality, and the amount of time spent in deep sleep. One trial in older adults showed significant improvements in insomnia scores within eight weeks. The effect is consistent across age groups, particularly in men who are deficient.

Why training makes it worse

If you train, you lose magnesium through sweat. The harder you train, the more you deplete. Most men who lift regularly, run, or do any sustained physical activity are running low without knowing it. They're tired, they're not recovering well, and they assume it's just the training load. Often it's the magnesium.

Which form matters

Not all magnesium is the same. Magnesium oxide, the cheapest form, has poor absorption. The Truuman Magnesium+ uses a higher-quality form that the body actually takes up. That's the difference between a supplement that works and one that doesn't.

When to take it

Before bed. Let the calming effect work with your body rather than against it.

If you've tried everything for sleep and haven't tried magnesium, try magnesium. It's not complicated and it's not expensive. For a lot of men, it's the thing that was missing.
