Does creatine affect testosterone?

Jun 04, 2026 · by Lewis Hackney

Not directly. Creatine doesn't stimulate testosterone production. But there's a piece of the picture that's worth understanding.

Some studies show creatine increases DHT, a potent androgen derived from testosterone, by around 50 percent over three weeks. DHT isn't testosterone, but it binds to androgen receptors more powerfully and is responsible for many of the effects people attribute to testosterone. Whether you consider that a testosterone effect depends on how you define the term.

What the research actually shows

The evidence on creatine and testosterone directly is mixed. Some studies show a modest increase in total testosterone, others show no change. The effect isn't large or consistent enough to make creatine a testosterone supplement.

Where creatine genuinely helps hormonal health is indirect. It improves training performance. Better training, with proper recovery, produces a better hormonal response over time. More muscle built, more growth hormone and testosterone stimulated post-training. The effect is downstream, not direct.

The DHT question

The DHT finding is real and worth knowing. If you're concerned about DHT for any reason, that's relevant information. For most men, higher DHT is a neutral or positive thing. It's part of normal male hormonal function.

The practical conclusion

If you're taking creatine for testosterone specifically, adjust your expectations. It's not a testosterone booster. It's a performance supplement that supports the training that supports hormonal health. That's a meaningful distinction.

For testosterone specifically, vitamin D and magnesium are the more direct interventions.
